Area Information

Bay City was named for its location on Bay Prairie, between Caney Creek and the bottomlands along the Colorado River of Texas. City planners enthusiastically promoted the idea of the new town through the publication of the Bay City Breeze, a newspaper distributed throughout the county. This, combined with the promise of a new courthouse, convinced voters to elect Bay City the new Matagorda County seat in 1894. Interestingly, Bay City received this distinction before a single building was erected on the townsite.

By 1914, Bay City had blossomed into a thriving community in the heart of the nation’s most bountiful rice-producing area. Three different railroads provided service to the city. Business and infrastructure flourished all around. Growth has remained steady over the last several decades.
